“I dreaded this day would come, was hoping it not be on my watch,” muttered Dave Gibson while he scanned his Gray Jay Pathfinder screen.
Commander Hudson was within earshot – “What’s that, lieutenant?”
“There’s a Russian Destroyer heading for Iqualuit, Sir, at 14 knots.”
“Current location?”
“Just rounded Resolution Island, sir.”
“That’s damn peculiar. Confirm it on ground radar.”
“Confirmed, sir. It’s the Kulakov”
“Bloody hell.”
“I’m getting an odd reading off Kugluktuk Captain, looks like a Russian frigate, the Admiral Griogorovich.”
Lieutenant Command Mackenzie’s brow wrinkled. “Time to call the clowns.”
The military hotline in Ottawa hadn’t rung for decades, except for its annual test by the Gatineau Canadian Forces Support Group. When Admiral Topshee picked it up, he re-routed it to the war room under the parliament buildings, and met the Chiefs of Defence Staff 5 minutes later.
He expected the two red lights on the arctic coast board to be lit up. In the five minutes it took him to get there there were three more.
In twenty minutes there were 30. “Get me the Prime Minister,” he said to his aide.
“A few minutes ago I got a panic call from the prime minister of Canada,” grinned Trump into the TV cameras that were semi-permanently set up in the Oval office. “He seemed very worried.”
“Canada claims an invasion fleet of Russian warships along their northern coast. ‘What do you want me to do about it?’ I asked the Canadian leader. It’s a shame that Canada has never pulled its weight in paying for its own national defence, taking advantage of the United States to pay for it all. Those days are over my friend, I told him.”
“As of this moment, President Putin is taking over the northern part of Canada from the North Pole, where Santa Claus lives, down to the 60th parallel. This region, which will be called New Russia, will form a security donut around the north pole, once we annex Greenland, and has a tremendous wealth of oil, gas, and minerals that will be shared between Russia and the USA. A one-mile wide DMZ will separate America from Russia along the 60th parallel and anyone found in the DMZ will be shot on site.”
“Everything between the sixtieth and forty-ninth parallels are now part of the United States of America. American forces are landing in Ottawa and securing the parliament buildings of the Canadian federal government. We will appoint an interim Governor of the 51st US State of Canada while the transition takes place. We hope this is a peaceful transition and that no one needs to get hurt, but our forces are prepared if Canadians try to resist. But how could they since they don’t have any guns!”
“Some will say this is an illegal act but we are completely within our rights. The border between Canada and the USA was never agreed to, and Canada was never a real country. Instead, they have acted very unfairly to the US, hoarding all the water, oil, trees and minerals that we need and then selling them to us at high prices. Very unfair.
“To the people of the former country of Canada, let me say this: Welcome to America. You will enjoy lower taxes and more freedom to make money and to own guns than you ever had as Canadians. People with proof of European Christian ancestors will be issued Green Cards allowing you to vote in municipal and state elections but not in Federal ones. Others will have a grace period of 3 weeks to leave Canada or face being deported.”
